In photosynthesis, the sun's energy is captured in order to make sugar and other organic compounds, such as lipids and proteins.

Plants use carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to produce oxygen, water, and food.

Photosynthesis is not unique to plants. Other organisms that are capable of photosynthesis include some protists, bacteria, and blue-green algae.
