Stem Cells To Lung Cells

Wednesday November 15, 2006
Scientists have successfully changed stem cells into lung cells. The stem cells were obtained from umbilical cord blood and changed into type II alveolar cells.

Type II alveolar cells help to allow the air sacs in the lungs to remain open. They also aid in repair if the airway becomes damaged.

The researchers are hopeful that these cells can be used in future research to study lung development and diseases of the lungs.

Information on the study can be found in the Nov. 7, 2006, issue of the journal Cytotherapy.

Awesome! Anything we can do with stuff like umbilical cord cells will help save lives in the interim until embryonic stem cell research gets government funding in the United States.

We won’t have to deal with the moral ambiguity of embryonic stem cell research if we can continue research with this sort of success using umbilical and adult marrow stem cells.
