BioNostalgia
Dateline: 12/18/97
It's the holiday season in the United States. Holidays always make me nostalgic and thankful. This week, I've compiled a top ten list of biology "things" that continue to amaze me.
10. The delicate balance of conditions on earth needed to sustain and propagate life.
9. The diversity of life on planet earth.
8. Fleas! I know, they're annoying on our pets, but they can jump over 10,000 times in about an hour!
7. The complex synergisms among organisms on earth.
6. The bumblebee bat. It is a little larger than a bumblebee and weighs a little less than a dime.
5. The intricate camouflage used by prey to avoid predators.
4. The copious amount information in a DNA strand.
3. Life itself.
2. The splendor of the human brain.
1. And I am always most amazed by the miracle of child birth.
Quote of the week regarding Biological Ethics: Cloning Revisited:
"I suspect that cloning will have very serious repercussions from a moral, ethical, and scientific standpoint. We'll just have to wait and see how the process pans out in the future."
