Bio-Lessons
Dateline: 05/08/97Across the country, biology teachers are using new and innovative techniques in the classroom. Many of these lessons have been posted on the WWW for others to view and use. Listed below are lesson plans that are designed to get students motivated and excited about biology. They have been subdivided by grade level.
- Creating a Creature: grades K-5
- Teachers can get students excited about worms, coelenterates, and arthropods with this lesson. Students can create their own creature and explain its life processes. They can also participate in an "animal convention."
- Photosynthesis and Transpiration: grades 6-8
- Students can learn first-hand about photosynthesis and how plants exchange gases with the atmosphere. Activities include seed germination and comparisons between pea seedlings and other seedlings from the environment.
- Making Three Dimensional Plant and Animal Cells: grades 6-10
- Making models has never been so fun. Students can make 3-D structures of cells while learning about cell organelles. We're sure that teachers and students both will enjoy playing with the play-doh.
- Make a Frog Sandwich: grades 9-10
- This is a great way for students to learn about the internal parts of a frog by creating a booklet. The Frog Sandwiches can be used to help identify organs and muscles during dissections.
- Ecology and Biome Unit: grades 9-12
- Build a zoological and botanical garden of North America in South Africa. Students can use the WWW to research ecology and biomes to find out how to populate their plant and animal gardens.
- DNA Fingerprinting for High School Biology: grades 9-12
- Students learn to identify unknown DNA samples by measuring and analyzing DNA fragments. This lesson provides an excellent way for students to learn genetic techniques such as gel electrophoreses.
