In October of 2001 paleontologists announced, in the journal Science, the discovery of the fossil remains of an enormous crocodile called SuperCroc. Scientifically named Sarcosuchus imperator (flesh crocodile emperor), this creature is believed to have roamed the earth 110 million years ago.

Paleontologists state that Sarcosuchus imperator was not a true dinosaur but an archosaur. Sarcosuchus imperator and modern crocodiles are thought to share a common ancestor.
