What is the fibrous pericardium?

  • The fibrous pericardium is the outer fibrous sac that covers the heart.

Function:

  • Provides an outer protective layer for the heart.

  • Keeps the heart contained in the chest cavity.

  • Prevents the heart from overexpanding when blood volume increases.
