Office regrets patent for modified humans

Tuesday, February 22, 2000

Munich -- A decision to grant a patent for the production of genetically modified humans was a serious mistake as well as contrary to German law, a spokesman for the European Patent Office admitted yesterday.

The office's admission followed revelations by the environmental group Greenpeace and the German edition of the Financial Times that a patent that could theoretically be used to clone human beings was approved in December. AFP ###
