Gross Anatomy of the Small Intestine

Saturday October 13, 2007
The small intestine is the longest section of the digestive tube. Your small intestine is about three and a half times your body length.

This structure of the digestive system consists of the following three segments:
  • Duodenum - receives secretions from the pancreas and liver.
  • Jejunum - located between the duodenum and the ileum and helps propel food along the digestive tract.
  • Ileum - absorbs digested products and empties into the large intestine.
The small intestine is the sole site in the digestive tube for the absorption of amino acids and monosaccharides. Most lipids are also absorbed in this organ.
