In an effort to stay ahead of a deadly fungal disease that has wiped out more than 100 frog species, research and conservation agencies have been collecting healthy frogs in areas not yet touched by the fungus. Gathering these frogs may be the only way to rescue them from extinction. While collecting frogs in Panama, scientists have discovered two previously unknown species.
One species of frog was named Pristimantis educatoris. The name educatoris was given in honor of a former professor from the University of Miami. The other frog species was named Pristimantis adnus. Its species name adnus is based on the acronym ADN, which stands for the Spanish acido deoxiribonucleico. This word is translated in English as deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. According to Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute researcher Andrew Crawford, this name was chosen "to underscore the usefulness of genetic techniques as we identify these new frog species and determine the relationships between tropical frogs that may look very similar." The researchers state that almost 15 percent of the new frog species discoveries in Panama and Costa Rica have happened within the past seven years.
