Are You Washing Your Hands?

One of the best ways to prevent bacteria related illnesses and other infectious disease is to wash your hands with soap and water. While most everyone has heard this message, studies have shown that people are still not washing their hands. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health reports that out of five hundred thousand people observed, only 32% of men and 64% of women wash their hands when using public restrooms.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether this potentially harmful behavior could be changed through electronic messages that were posted at the entrance of service station toilets. Some of the messages that were displayed on the screens included: "Water doesn't kill germs, soap does." and "Soap it off or eat it later." The most effective message however was, "Is the person next to you washing with soap?" These reminders seemed to suggest that both men and women are more likely to wash their hands with soap and water when they believe they are being observed.

Washing hands with soap and water is the right thing to do. Hand washing lotions are not enough because resistant bacteria remain in the lotion in the hands. Very important is something I have never heard or seen mentioned: do not touch your face, keep hands away from face except to wash face with soap and water, otherwise you are passing bacteria/viruses into eyes, mouth, nose.

Margaret has it right: washing hands is almost useless; viruses are unaffected by it and bacteria grow back almost immediately. Prevent getting a viral URI by keeping your own fingers out of your own face. Prevent spreading one by limiting the spray of your coughs & sneezes. You’ll pick up more germs by touching the faucets in a public washroom than you’ll wash away. Your immune system is primed by small exposures to foreign microbes.

it’s true diseases can be contacted by not washing the hands but what type of soap is best? is it just anysoap or antibacteria soaps?
