It has been known for some time that certain plant fragrances have the ability to calm a person's mood and reduce stress. Researchers in Japan have now shown that certain fragrances reduce stress when inhaled by changing gene activity and blood chemistry.

The scientists used linalool, a pleasant scented natural component of many plant oils, to determine the effectiveness of fragrances on stress levels. Linalool reduced stress heightened immune system cell levels back to normal and decreased the activity of over 100 genes that increase activity when stress levels rise. It is hoped that the findings from this study can be used to develop tests for identifying specific fragrances that reduce stress.
