Burning the Fat

Friday February 6, 2009
Researchers from Georgia State University have discovered how the brain regulates fat burning in the body. It appears that fat cells give feedback to the brain to determine if the fat burning process should be started, stopped, or continued.

The researchers compare the process to how a thermostat regulates temperature in a house. The thermostat uses sensory information from the environment to determine whether to turn the heating unit on or off. Similarly, fat cells provide sensory information to the brain to initiate the fat burning process. The brain and fat cells communicate with each other through the sympathetic nervous system. This system regulates functions in the body.
