We all know that smoking is bad for the body. Now researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago have found evidence that cigarette smoke can actually cause the heart to change its shape.

The researchers discovered that exposure to cigarette smoke causes the body to release certain enzymes that are responsible for cell growth. These enzymes, along with increased levels of the hormone norepinephrine, are thought to be responsible for altering the shape of the left ventricle. Researchers believe that the activation of the enzymes is a major factor in the development of cigarette smoke-induced heart injury.

There are other ways smoking can change the shape of a heart. As it raises blood pressure, this can cause dilation in the heart, valves and arteries. Those with a predisposition to this (due to other causes, such as Marfan syndrome) should avoid smoking for this added reason.
