Mitosis is a process of cell division in which the genetic material from a parent cell is divided equally between two cells.

Cell division enables organisms to grow and reproduce. Before a dividing cell enters mitosis, it must duplicate its genetic material and increase its organelles and cytoplasm. This period of growth is called interphase.

Mitosis consists of several stages:
  • Prophase
  • Metaphase
  • Anaphase
  • Telophase
Do you know the phase of the cell cycle in which a cell spends 90 percent of its time? Test your knowledge of mitosis. Take the Mitosis Quiz!
