World's Largest Frog
Wednesday February 20, 2008
Researchers have discovered the fossil remains of what could be the largest frog ever to live on earth.
The frog, named Beelzebufo, weighed about 10 pounds and was 16 inches long. In comparison, the goliath frog (largest living frog in present times) weighs about 7 pounds and is around 12.5 inches long.
This discovery is also significant in that the remains of Beelzebufo were found in Madagascar, but its closest living relatives today are found in South America.
This suggests that Madagascar and South America may have been connected at one time in history.
