Scientists report that obesity in some people may be linked to a virus, specifically the human adenovirus-36 (Ad-36). This virus was found to cause levels of fat to increase in some people.
In the study, researchers took adult stem cells from fatty tissue and exposed some of the cells to the Ad-36 virus. The rest of the stem cells were not exposed to the virus.
The researchers discovered that most of the stem cells that were exposed to the virus developed into fat cells. The cells that were not exposed to the virus did not develop into fat cells.
Exactly how the virus may cause obesity in some people is not currently known.
