Newly Discovered Protein Destroys Anthrax

Saturday April 22, 2006
Scientists have identified a new protein that destroys anthrax bacteria. This protein, called PlyPH, will attack anthrax bacteria and cause them to explode.

PlyPH is similar to the PlyG protein that bacteriophages use to pierce holes in bacteria.

PlyPH has special properties that make it very effective against anthrax.
  • PlyPH works in a wide pH range so that it can work inside or outside of a body.

  • It is highly specific to the anthrax bacteria.
The researchers believe that this protein could be used to treat people and animals infected with anthrax. It could also be used to decontaminate buildings, machinery, and clothing.
