HIV Uses Trojan Horse Method to Infect Cells
Wednesday September 10, 2003
Researchers at Johns Hopkins suggest that HIV uses a veil of human proteins, in a Trojan horse manner, to infect cells. To go from cell to cell, HIV is packaged in an "envelope" made from viral proteins and proteins from human cell membranes. The researchers propose that HIV relies on the proteins from human cell membranes to gain entrance into the cell. If this hypothesis is true, new vaccines could be made to target the human proteins in the virus's envelope as a way of preventing infection. Read more.
